Burn Violence Survivors – Nepal, established in 2008, stands out as one of the rare organizations dedicated to the prevention, protection, advocacy, curative measures, and long-term recovery and rehabilitation of burn survivors. BVS-Nepal extends assistance and support to survivors of burn incidents and violence, encompassing attempted homicide attacks often involving substances like kerosene or acid, as well as cases of self-immolation and attempted suicide, frequently rooted in domestic violence. Since its inception, the organization has successfully aided over 8500 burn victims through medical and surgical interventions, counseling, nutritional support, and physiotherapy. Moreover, BVS-Nepal has effectively provided life skills and vocational training to thirty female survivors of burn violence, empowering them to embark on new life journeys.

The intricate interplay of social norms with patriarchal values renders women susceptible to various forms of violence, including burn or acid attacks. Particularly, young women face risks of burn violence and acid attacks when rejecting proposals of love, marriage, or sexual advances. In both rural and urban settings, women are unfairly accused of witchcraft, face discrimination in dowry-related and other marital disputes, land or property conflicts, or due to an inability to bear a male child. The primary causes of burn violence include domestic violence (43.7%), intra-family conflicts such as inter-caste marriages, property disputes, and economic issues (30.5%), dowry system (7%), and extramarital affairs (6.5%). Data collected through media monitoring at BVS-Nepal since 2010 reveals a total of 245 reported cases, averaging 40 cases per year.

Mission

The mission of BVS-Nepal is to provide support and assistance to burn violence survivors and work towards preventing the occurrence of such violence through a network of partnerships.

BVS – Nepal aspires to reduce the incidence of burns in Nepal, enhance the quality of services available to burn survivors, and establish a comprehensive support system enabling survivors to lead independent and active lives.
