Pana+Care in Kenya
A USSD healthcare platform that is a one-stop solution to getting healthcare services at an affordable rate in Kenya.
Project start date : 18/10/2020
Last updated : 08/12/2025
Beneficiary country : Kenya
What problem does the initiative address ?
According to Oxfam International, the gap between the richest and poorest has reached extreme levels in Kenya. That is, less than 0.1% of the population owns more wealth than the bottom 99.9%. The problem facing the majority of Kenyans is accessing affordable healthcare services.
Detailed description of the initiative
PanaCare was founded on October 18, 2020, by Beverly Senda Otieno, who was inspired by the Covid-19 challenges to provide a wide range of telehealth services via USSD technology to patients without Internet access. The product is also available and accessible via Web and Mobile to patients and healthcare providers, providing access to additional services.
It provides patients with the convenience of receiving medical care without requiring them to leave their homes. The telemedicine platform connects patients with licensed healthcare professionals who can diagnose, treat, and prescribe medication for various illnesses. It uses an advanced technology to ensure that all consultations are secure, confidential, and of the highest possible quality. Our platform is accessible on multiple devices, and available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It also provides a variety of value-added services such as online booking, prescription refills, and appointment reminders to ensure that patient’s healthcare experiences are as seamless and stress-free as possible.
What is the proposed solution added value ?
This medical platform for patients and doctors uses USSD technology to improve accessibility and provide more options for affordable healthcare services to the overall population. By creating a platform to access medical services from base clinics to hospitals, citizens can access these services and monitor their health going forward.
Multiple alternative solutions exist, however, they specialize in individual services. Tibu, Dial Daktari, and Sawa Doc handle online consultation in Kenya via a mobile application. For medicine delivery services, My Dawa handles this. The booking of appointments is often by specific hospital portals and ambulance services are handled by E-Plus Kenya and Kenya Red Cross.
Pana+Care is a harbor for medical services. As opposed to facilitating a service, it allows users to choose the appropriate services needed, offers the benefit of having multiple medical services on one platform, allows for the access of these services offline (USSD framework) and via a mobile application too.
