About the project
AlloLaafia is a service to raise awareness about health and nutrition practices through the regular dissemination of personalised information to women and mothers and their husbands by means of SMS and voice messages. The campaigns are based on three main themes.
- Infant and young child feeding (IYCF): for this theme, the messages are personalised and disseminated according to the age of the child. They provide guidance to parents until their child reaches his or her second birthday
- Pregnancy monitoring: for this theme the messages are personalised and adjusted to the stage of pregnancy and sent to the expectant mother until her due date.
- Family planning: for this theme, the messages are personalised and disseminated according to the beneficiary’s gender.
The objectives are to reach 20,000 women and men through its campaigns in the Fada N’Gourma commune in eastern Burkina Faso, and to improve maternal and infant care knowledge and practices, as well as IYCF (by at least +10 points). People began registering on the digital messaging platform on 06/06/2016.
In Gourma province, one in two children suffers from chronic or acute malnutrition due mainly to poor feeding practices, hygiene and delayed medical care.
At present, awareness raising and the dissemination of health and nutrition information are mainly limited to group talks and home visits that are costly in terms of time and financial resources, and do not reach remote populations. 75% of the women in Fada have at least one mobile phone: and this is an opportunity to improve the health of the most remote communities at a low cost.
