About the initiative

Counterfeit medicines kill millions around the world yearly, especially in third world and developing countries. With Sproxil Defender, consumers can protect themselves from fake medicine in seconds, at no cost to them.

Many manufacturers have previously tried holograms, barcodes and other technology, which require special equipment. However, with Sproxil Defender, the most basic feature phones can be used, ensuring that even the economically disadvantaged members of the society can use the service, for free.

Sproxil provides manufacturers with tamper evident labels which are affixed to units of the product. At the point of purchase, the consumer scratches the label to reveal a unique 13 digit pin, which he then texts to Sproxil's shortcode free of charge. Within seconds he receives a response on the authenticity of the product. This verification is also available through the Sproxil website, the Sproxil consumer app, and a dedicated call center.
